Specialized Training on May 19th: Safe Infant Sleep Practices and Strategies to Reduce the Risk of SIDS

Please see the following information regarding an upcoming specialized track from the Colette Lamothe-Galette Community Health Worker Institute (CLG-CHWI)! The New Jersey Department of Health is excited to present this free virtual opportunity in collaboration with the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Center of New Jersey.


On Monday, May 19th from 10 AM to 12 PM, join a training opportunity for Safe Infant Sleep Practices and Strategies to Reduce the Risk of SIDS!


This specialized training is led by the Sudden Infant Death (SIDS) Center of New Jersey in collaboration with the Colette Lamothe-Galette Community Health Worker Institute to provide CHWs with a definition of the SIDS, review of risk factors and risk reducing practices from before the onset of pregnancy through to the first 12 months of life, a description of how to address barriers to adopting these behaviors, a description of best practices for educating parents, and education tools and resources for families.

Barbara M. Ostfeld, Ph.D. is a professor of pediatrics in the division of neonatology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Program Director of the SIDS Center of New Jersey, which she helped establish in 1987. Her research contributed to the safe sleep policy of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For her work on SIDS, she was named a Champion for Children by the NJ Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a member of the SIDS Autopsy Protocol Committee of the Office of the NJ State Medical Examiner and served on the national expert leadership group on SIDS of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Investigation Subcommittee of the NJ Child Fatality Review Board. As a member of the Division of Neonatology, she also helped establish and previously served as program director of the High-Risk Infant Follow-up program.


Ariana Nuñez-Restituyo, MPH is an adjunct instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Health Education and Social Media Manager of the SIDS Center of New Jersey. She graduated with her B.S. in Public Health with a minor in Psychology from Rutgers University in 2015 and continued her education at the Rutgers School of Public Health to complete her MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology and Maternal and Child Health in 2019. She has over 12 years of experience within the field of MCH and non-profits as a health educator, data analyst, and community outreach specialist.
